Tutorials.

Reading your essay in a tutorial, is like fighting a war in the trenches. Sentence by sentence, you have to be prepared to defend yourself, every move you make. Meter by meter you have to be prepared to face fire from your enemy.

Eventually the war is won. The sentences have been defended, but just as in a war there have been casualties along the way. Some sentences, you realise, have just been put in there early in the morning for no reason, and they have to go. The victory is overwhelming though. It was a tough fight.

Slutstrejkat

”We are gonna imagine what might be”

Barak Obama. The next American president?

He is a fantastic speaker. But I can help getting an uncomfortable feeling. In Europe, we haven’t seen mass rallies like this one since …. the 30s. Most political commentators now take his victory (in the fight for the nomination) for granted; the question is rather, when will she give up?

In this week’s Economist, they are trying to show that you can prove anything with electoral statistics. Quite an interesting idea, as Clinton keeps on saying: count the votes.

”Might Hillary Clinton end up winning more votes in the primaries than Barack Obama? It wouldn’t necessarily alter anything: rules are rules, and it is delegates, not raw votes, that count. But it would be embarrassing for the front-runner, and it might give a few party elders pause for thought.

With only three primaries left, Mr Obama is ahead, with 16.7m votes to her 16.2m, a slender edge of 450,000. But that is not the end of the story. It is only fair to take some account of what happened in Florida and Michigan, which were stripped of their delegates for voting too early, but which are electorally vital and whose views ought to carry some weight. In Florida Mrs Clinton won 295,000 more votes than Mr Obama; in Michigan she won 328,000 while he won none because his name was not on the ballot. Add these in, and Mrs Clinton is magically 174,000 ahead.

That, of course, is unfair to Mr Obama, who took his name off the Michigan ballot to respect party rules. So add to his total the 238,000 people who voted “uncommitted”, the only way they could register a preference for him. Now he is back ahead, by 64,000 votes. He deserves another 100,000 votes as four of the states he won do not release vote counts: these can be estimated. But when Puerto Rico votes on June 1st, its largely Hispanic population could give a boost worth at least a couple of hundred thousand votes to Mrs Clinton, putting her back in the lead. Like Al Gore in 2000, though, the popular vote will probably be her only victory.”

So, what happens remains to be seen. To be continued.

Divorce and new acquaintances

So this might sound quite silly to someone who has not experienced something similar. But I’m telling you – it’s not!

I have a calculator which gives me the answers to my questions. I’ve had it for many years. I still don’t understand close to a majority of its functions. But I like it. If I can’t solve an equation by hand, I enter it, get the answer and solve the equation backwards. Brilliant. It has taken me through many exams.

Now they’ve decided that I’m not allowed to use my calculator. Silly rules. Why? It’s not like someone is going to tell me in the future, outside the small aquarium of Oxford, that I’m not allowed to use my calculator, to solve real-world problems. What’s important is that I get the solution.

I therefore had to buy a new one. Which wont give me the answers. It hurts. And I am a bit bitter, I must admit. Just needed to tell someone about that. Thank you for listening.

Today’s exercise.

Just ran from the library to my room in absolutely massive rain. They throw you out at 1 am; outrageous.

Quite exciting jumping between the ponds that have already formed around college. And wet. Where is the spring?

The blogging hasn’t been as frequent recently (and hopefully wont be the upcoming days) as I’ve got to produce four essays this week (Mon-Wed) and then have a full Economics collection on Fri. Life is exciting here, what can I tell you. And I wont complain! It’s self-inflicted pain. No doubt about it.

Moved on to reading Nozick’s Anarchy, State and Utopia which is so interesting. At least one of the essays will be truly inspiring. I’ve chosen to answer: ”Whould it be wrong to ban sports which involve cruelty to animals if this ban would diminish total happiness?” Before I do that, I’ll try to get some sleep. It’s Tues tomorrow morning, meaning that it’s time to meet my exciting Italian tutor and I’ll definately need some sleep before that. Buonanotte!
